action

Buddy Evans, a staunch single , is the event manager for Madison Square Garden in New York. Buddy lives alone, but is looked after by the housekeeper Celia. He often has to do with children, which is why he wants a son who should carry his name on. Buddy decides to hire a surrogate mother . His friends Larry and Kurt help him find the right surrogate mother through interviews. Maggie, a waitress in a nearby bistro, is interested.

Buddy is visited in his office by the attractive interior designer Jenny Lofton. However, Buddy mistakenly thinks she is a candidate for surrogacy. Jenny is irritated by his questions. Buddy tries to clear up the matter. Buddy later runs into Maggie again. Maggie is actually an aspiring singer who only works as a waitress to make a living. The money Buddy wants to pay the wanted surrogate mother would be used by Maggie for a trip to Paris to start her singing career there.

Buddy wants to try Maggie, but he has problems . Maggie Buddy can help with a little role play. Soon she will actually be pregnant. Maggie moves in with Buddy so he can take care of her. He oversees everything in her life from dieting to her pregnancy exercises. However, he does not otherwise pay any attention to her, but meets with other women. It doesn't take long before Maggie doesn't just feel ignored. She now wants to keep the baby to herself. Soon Buddy realizes that he will lose everything that is important to him. He comes to and marries Maggie, with whom he leads a happy life. However, all of the children Maggie gives birth to are girls.

criticism

The lexicon of international films saw the production as "a frivolous comedy tempered by irony and wit; largely entertaining, with a few surprising gags, often quite drastic in dialogue."

The film magazine Cinema found, "As a super macho, Reynolds defies the predictable script from one or two smackers."

Awards

Peter Billingsley was nominated for the Young Artist Award in 1982 . The song Baby Talk by David Shire and David Frishberg was awarded the Golden Raspberry for worst song in the same year .

The Paramount Pictures production premiered on October 2, 1981 in the United States. In Germany it came onto the video market in autumn 1984.
