The Angels (American band)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Angels were an American girl group of the 1960s, best known for their No. 1 single My Boyfriend's Back (1963).

history

The trio already appeared as Starlits in the late 1950s and released two singles on Astro Records in 1960, but they were unsuccessful. After a change of record company, Caprice Records released the single Till in 1961 , which became an instant hit and reached number 14 in the US singles charts. Their second single couldn't make it into the charts, but with their third Cry Baby Cry they achieved a Top40 hit. They were accompanied by the Hutch Davie orchestra on all recordings that were released on the Caprice Records label. After the third single, the lead singer Linda Jansen left the group and was replaced by Peggy Santiglia, who had previously sung jingles and in the Broadway musical Do Re Mi had occurred. In the course of 1962, three more singles were released on Caprice Records, but none of them could be placed in the charts. In early 1963, a single was released by the Ascot Records record company , which was also unsuccessful.

After the Angels had switched to the record company Smash Records , they had their greatest success in 1963 with the song My Boyfriend's Back , with which they were classified in a number of girl groups such as Shirelles , Marvelettes , Crystals or Chiffons . The track My Boyfriend's Back was produced by Richard Gottehrer, who is also co-author of the song.

Although the group had a few smaller hits by spring 1964, there were no major successes. After the following three singles, which were released on 1964 Smash Records, were unsuccessful, the group's record deal was not renewed. The group changed record labels twice in the following years and recorded a total of six singles for RCA Records in 1967 and 1968 . The Angels' last single was released in 1974 on Polydor Records . Until the mid-1980s, however, the Angels continued to perform in nightclubs and at rock revival shows.
