Smash Records
Smash Records was an American record company that was active in the field of light music from 1961 to 1970.
history
The Chicago record company Mercury Records founded Smash Records in March 1961 as a subsidiary. Shelby Singleton was appointed as managing director . It was planned that Smash would take over the teen pop , country , gospel and foreign imports sectors . Smash acted as an independent record company, distribution was taken over by the parent company Mercury. In addition, Mercury signed production contracts with several small record labels, the singles of which were included in the Smash catalog. The first catalog number 1700 was a single from the Nero label. The foreign imports were included in the Smash catalog under the Fontana label.
The first single with the Smash logo came out with the Paramours, the later Righteous Brothers in March 1961. In May of the same year Smash had its first title in the Hot 100 of the US music magazine Billbord . Joe Barry reached number 24 for the song I'm a Fool to Care . In August 1961, Wooden Heart , sung by Joe Dowell, was the first number one hit . With Hey! Baby by Bruce Channel and My Boyfriend's Back with the Angels were added later another number-one title. A total of about 40 singles reached a place in the top 50. Between 1961 and 1970 Smash released over 560 singles and more than 130 vinyl long-playing records. Most of the singles were produced with Roger Miller (23), followed by Jerry Lee Lewis (20).
1970 the production of records under the label Smash was stopped. In 1980 the media group PolyGram Smash revived for a short time and released records with country music under the label.
