Joe Barry (born July 13, 1939 as Joseph Barrios in Cut Off, Louisiana , † August 31, 2004 in Cut Off) was an American pop music singer who released records during the 1950s to the 1970s.

Musical career

Joseph Barrios grew up with his family belonging to the Cajun Francophone population in southern Louisiana. He began releasing songs on local record labels in the late 1950s . He recorded a single in 1960 under the name Roosevelt Jones, as always later, in English with Som Record in Houston . His following records were released under his shortened name Joe Barry. Between 1960 he recorded three singles on the Louisiana-based label Jin.

In 1961 he switched to Smash Records . There, in April 1961, the titles I'm a Fool to Care and I Got a Feeling, already published by Jin, were republished . While the Jin single went unnoticed, the song I'm a Fool to Care was inducted into the Hot 100 by US music magazine Billbord in May 1961 . There it rose to number 24, while it even reached number 15 in the rhythm and blues charts . The record was sold over a million times and was awarded the gold record . I'm a Fool to Care was also released in the UK, reaching number 49. Teardrops in My Heart and For You Sunshine also appeared on both Jin and Smash. The A-side of the smash single Teardrops in My Heart also made it into the Hot 100 and had its best value of 63.

After five singles with Smash, Barry released his records from 1962 on Princess Records in Pasadena (Texas) . There, too, there were five single productions that were just as unsuccessful as the subsequent records on Sho-Biz and Nugget. Barry separated from Nugget in a dispute and was hired on an oil platform in 1970. He only returned to the music scene in 1975, recorded a single with Crazy Cajun and released two long-playing records with country songs (1977 on ABC Records) and Gospels (1980). Thereafter, health problems forced Barry to withdraw from the music business again. In 2003 his last album, Been Down that Muddy Road , came out. A year later he died at the age of 65 in Cut Off, his birthplace.
