The Swingin 'Medallions is the name of an American surf music band that released records between 1965 and 1970.

history

The band was formed in the early 1960s by students from Greenwood, South Carolina . In addition to their front man John McElrath, seven other musicians belonged to the group. They initially called themselves The Medallions, but when they began to release records in 1965, they added the addition Swingin 'to avoid confusion with the music group The Medallions from the early 1950s.

The Swingin 'Medallions released their first single on the Californian record company Dot Records with the two titles Bye Bye, Silly Girl and I Want to Be Your Guy . After brief interludes with the small labels 4 Sale and Apollo, the group received a recording contract with Smash Records in 1965 . There she recorded the first single in early 1966, the A-side of which contained the title Double Shot (of My Baby's Love) . The song, composed in the style of surf music, reached number 17 in the Hot 100 of the US music magazine Billbord in the spring of 1966 and sold millions of copies. The following long-playing record with the same title reached number 88 in the LP charts Top 200. The title of the successor single She Drives Me out of My Mind was also included in the Hot 100, but did not go beyond number 71 there. In 1967 the contract with Smash ran out, and it was followed by three more singles with the record companies Capitol Records and 1-2-3.

The Swingin 'Medallions were especially popular in the southern United States. Although the band members changed several times over the years, John McElrath, who suffered from Parkinson's disease in 2003, managed to keep the group going, so that even 50 years after their founding they still give concerts under the slogan "The Party Band of the South".
