Bierbaum Tower

The Bierbaum Tower is a lookout tower in the north of the Wielkopolski National Park near the village of Szreniawa . The tower belongs to the National Museum of Agriculture and the Agricultural Food Industry and is operated by the National Park Administration ( Ośrodek Muzealno-Dydaktyczny Wielkopolskiego Parku Narodowego ) in Jeziory .
The tower, also known as the “Bierbaum Mausoleum” ( Mauzoleum Bierbaumów ), is located about 500 meters east of the former Bierbaum manor in the forest. It was built around 1860, probably based on a project by Martin Gropius . The exact circumstances of the construction and the function of the tower are not known. Presumably Leonhard (also known as Herrmann) Bierbaum had it built as a memorial for his daughter, who died young, and as a family mausoleum. It is disputed whether the daughter and other family members were actually buried here or whether it was rather a symbolic memorial site.
The building was built in the neo-Gothic style from red brick. It has a cruciform floor plan (13.5 m × 10.5 m). The central element is the tower, which has the shape of a cuboid with a square floor plan at its base and an octagonal shape above a height of 10 meters. There is a coat of arms of the builder above the main entrance. At the top of the tower there is a roof terrace and a viewing terrace at a height of 22 meters.
The lower part of the building has brown stripes walled in horizontally on the outer wall. Cornices, window frames and other decorative elements made of artificial stone decorate and structure the facade. In 1993 the building was placed under a preservation order and underwent extensive repairs. Inside there is a small exhibition on the history of the national park and the development of the region from the Paleolithic to the present day.
