Megalodon abbreviatus is an extinct mussel species from the Middle Devonian period( Givetium to Frasnium - 391.8 to 374.5 mya ) of the Rhenish Slate Mountains . M. abbreviatus lived in reefs and can therefore be found today in mass limestone .

The relatively large, equally-folded mussel has a thick, often smooth or concentrically striped, domed shell with an oval shape. The powerful vertebrae of the two valves are inflated and curved forward. In adult specimens, the length is greater than the width.
