action

The film consists of five episodes. The first tells about Arden, who takes care of her disabled mother. She is often verbally abused by her mother. She is only noticed by those around her after she discovers the body of the murdered Krista while walking and reports her find to the police. In this way, Arden meets Rudy, who is fascinated by serial killers . The two start a relationship. Arden leaves her mother.

Leah, the sister of a girl who has been missing for years, is a student in forensic medicine. Her parents still hope that the sister will be found. The search overlaps family life. When Krista's body is discovered, Leah initially hopes it is her sister.

Ruth is unhappy in her marriage to Carl. She discovers blood-smeared women's clothes among her husband's things. One night she wants to hand the things over to the police, but she changes her mind and burns them.

Krista's mother Melora is interrogated by the police. She meets Krista's roommate and lover Rosetta, who makes a living from prostitution . Melora learns that her second husband has molested Krista in the past. Rosetta leads Melora to Krista's little daughter. Melora, who has separated from her husband, takes in her granddaughter.

The last episode precedes the other four. It shows the last days of Krista's life. She hitchhiked to bring a present to her foster daughter. She meets Carl, who takes her with him in his car.

Reviews

Kirk Honeycutt wrote in The Hollywood Reporter on November 8, 2006, that the director avoids showmanship and gives the film "integrity". It shows the problems of individual female characters in inhospitable areas of Los Angeles, where people would suffer from hopelessness. The film is intended for adult viewers who are prepared to take risks.

Robert Koehler wrote in the magazine Variety that the weak end shows that the episode structure has potential, but also, like a trap, jeopardizes the effect.

Karen Moncrieff won the San Diego Film Critics Society Award in 2006 and an award from the Deauville Film Festival in 2007 . She, Mary Beth Hurt, and the film were nominated for an Independent Spirit Award in 2007. The film was nominated for the 2007 Artios Prize of the Casting Society of America .
