Macosquin Abbey ( Moyscosquin , Latin Clarus fons , Irish Mainistir Mhaigh Choscáin ) is a former Cistercian abbey in Northern Ireland in the United Kingdom . It was in the county of Londonderry at the place Macosquin ( Irish Maigh Choscáin ).
history
A monastic settlement is said to have been in Macosquin as early as the 6th century. The Cistercian monastery was built in 1218 as a direct subsidiary of the primary abbey of Morimond Monastery . In 1401 Abbot John O'Flannra became Bishop of Derry. Around 1484, the abbot's position was orphaned for some time. The abbey must not have been prosperous. It is said to have been dissolved in 1604, but there is no evidence for it. The place was occupied at the beginning of the 17th century by a plantation of the London guild of the Merchant Taylors .
Buildings and plant
With the construction of Glebe House in the 18th century, the last remains of the abbey were removed. The Protestant church of Saint Mary probably occupies the place of the earlier abbey church and perhaps also uses its foundations. A lancet window from the 13th century is also built into Saint Mary.
