action

After Cameron Post lost her parents in a car accident, she had to move in with her aunt. It was 1993 when she slowly discovered her homosexuality in her new home and began a relationship with her friend Coley Taylor. When their new guardians out of this is because she was caught by her partner Jamie having sex in the car in the parking lot with the prom queen, Cameron is from her aunt in the Christian conversion Camp sent God's Promise, a re-education camp where her proper gender roles are returned should. Before she moves into her room, her belongings are searched. Their rooms are also checked regularly at night. The camp accommodates a wide variety of young people who are seriously trying to change themselves and who have promised to do so in a contract.

In individual as well as group therapies, the participants, who all suffer from the "same-sex attraction", the pathologizing term for their disposition, learn under the guidance of Dr. Marsh to fathom the causes of their supposedly misguided sexuality and to find the way back to God. A drawing of an iceberg and a ship should help them, with the underwater part of the iceberg representing the causes. Dr. Marsh calls same-sex love sin. Her brother Rick, who also works for the program she leads, has been healed of his predisposition.

During a phone call with Coley, Cameron learns that she loves her too, but that she also wants a family herself. In letters Coley had accused her of having led her to sin. Cameron works on himself, indulging in gymnastics and jogging, trying to make the most of her situation. During masturbation, she tries desperately to imagine having sex with her ex-boyfriend Jamie, but she fails. When her roommate Erin comes to her bed one night and does it with her hand, she has an orgasm very quickly.

When the students learn that Mark, who is described as frail by his father and who was hoping to return home shortly, tried to cut off his genitals with a razor and was taken to the hospital, everyone is shocked. The incident did not leave Rick unscathed either, and he bursts into tears in Cameron's presence. The case is being investigated by an investigator. It is not the form of therapy in the Christian re-education camp itself that is being questioned, only the suitability of the staff.

Cameron, Jane, and Adam decide to flee camp on the pretext of a morning hike. In the forest they burn their iceberg drawings, on which each of them has written their own personal assumptions about the reasons for their sexual orientation, and leave the facility on the back of a pick-up truck.

Literary template

The Miseducation of Cameron Post is based on the youth book of the same name by Emily M. Danforth from 2012. According to the writer, the story of the writer was influenced by the controversy surrounding Zach Stark in 2005, which after his coming out from his parents in a camp was sent to heal him. Danforth set her coming-out lesbian story, which she tells in her debut novel, in her own hometown of Miles City, Montana. For her work she was nominated for the Goodreads Choice Awards Best Young Adult Fiction.

Situation of the LGBTQ community in the USA

After the American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from the Manual of Mental Disorders in 1973, the medical establishment largely abandoned these practices. Nonetheless, efforts to convert homosexuals continued, mostly by less respected advisers and religious organizations. Their methods tend to focus on talk therapy, but some also use treatments designed to induce reluctance to result in physical torture, including inducing nausea and vomiting, using electric shocks and ice baths, as well as photos or Videos. Neil J. Young of the Huffington Post cites a study published in early 2018 by UCLA's Williams Institute , according to which approximately 700,000 adults in the United States underwent "conversion therapy" at some point in their lives, half of them lived this experience as a teenager. Nearly 80,000 LGBTQ teenagers are undergoing therapy before they are 18 years old, according to the Williams Institute research. Despite the rejection of conversion therapy by leading health organizations, including the American Medical Association and the American Psychological Association, and evidence that such treatments may not work but can cause emotional and psychological harm, 36 states still allow conversion therapy for minors, however even in states that have made therapy illegal for minors, these laws usually apply only to psychiatric counselors. Religious and spiritual counselors are generally exempt from the prohibitions and therefore do little to help restrict the practice.
