The Rider (dt .: "The Rider") is a feature film by Chloé Zhao from the year 2017 . The neo- western , for which the director also wrote the screenplay, is about a young Indian horse trainer (played by Brady Jandreau ) who is forced to give up riding as a result of a fatal fall from the saddle.

action
An Indian reservation in South Dakota , in the present: the young Brady Blackburn sustained a near fatal head injury at the rodeo . His right hand keeps cramping and he has to loosen the fingers one by one with his left hand. While riding he has a seizure and the attending doctor tells him that such seizures will recur and intensify if he continues to ride. Horses and riding, however, is the only thing he can and wants. First he takes a temporary job in a supermarket because he has a disabled sister and a father who plays at ATMs. The mother has been dead for five years.
In the evenings he meets with other young rodeo riders. One more time he wants to ride a rodeo. His father declares him crazy, but Brady replies that the way he was raised by his father, he now has to go to the rodeo. At the venue - he is registered and has already moved - he realizes that he cannot jump off the horse in time with his cramping hand and that the risk is too great.
He then visits his friend in the hospital, who suffered a serious injury while riding a bull and has since been largely paralyzed. He practices movement sequences with him and paints him and himself from riding a horse through the wide prairie .
background
The main actor, Brady Jandreau, plays his own story in this film, together with other amateur actors. His father and his mentally handicapped sister also play themselves in the film. His best friend Lane Scott, a formerly very successful rodeo champion who has been living in a nursing home with severe physical disabilities since a car accident (in the film it's a rodeo accident), is also involved in the plot. The director Chloé Zhao met the descendants of Lakota- Sioux in 2014 while shooting her debut film Songs My Brother Taught Me on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota.
