Josephine Decker (born April 2, 1981 ) is an American actress , film and television director , screenwriter, and film editor .

life and work

Josephine Decker grew up in Texas and studied Comparative Literature at Princeton University . After graduating, she worked as a speaker at ABC News , researching and collecting clips and footage for the station's news documentaries. It was the beginning of a seven-year career in the documentary (film) field.

She shot her first short film Naked Princeton , in which a student founds a secret nudist association and is confronted with the conservative part of the students, in 2005. The production Butter on the Latch was her first feature film in 2013. The experimental thriller is about two friends who go together to a Balkan folk festival in the forests of Mendocino and are more and more immersed in the mystical world of the other festival-goers. The film was shot on a minimal budget and the plot was largely improvised. Thou Wast Mild and Lovely directed Decker in 2014. The film is set on a farm in Kentucky and focuses on the erotic tension between a farm owner's daughter and a seasonal worker who hires on the farm. Decker was represented with both films at the Berlinale in 2014 .

In 2015 she was back in Berlin. This time she was invited as an author to the International Literature Festival Berlin and showed Thou vast mild and lovely as part of the special “On the Situation of Feminism” .

In Madeline's Madeline , Decker addresses the exploitative structures that prevail in the film and theater scene and with which actors in particular are confronted. On her set she tried not to reproduce exactly these structures and to create an atmosphere in which every person can contribute to the process of making the film and express criticism. "She'd put herself in a position where she'd be open to hearing things that probably weren't necessarily what she wanted to hear - It was extraordinary," said actress Molly Parker about Decker. Her film Shirley , which will be shown in the newly created Encounters section at the Berlinale 2020 , is about the horror author Shirley Jackson , who takes in a young couple with her husband, a literary critic. The plot is based on the novel Shirley by Susan Scarf Merrell .
