Yardie is a British crime film directed by Idris Elba , which premiered on January 20, 2018 as part of the Sundance Film Festival . The film is based on a novel of the same name by the British author Victor Headley . From February 16, 2018 was Yardie as part of the Berlin International Film Festival presented in the Panorama section and came on August 24, 2018 release in the UK.

In Jamaica in the early 1970s. Young D witnesses his brother's murder and finds accommodation with the influential Don. Ten years later he is sent to London to build a drug empire and meet up with his girlfriend and daughter again. But then her past catches up with her.

The film is based on a novel of the same name by the Jamaica-born British author Victor Headley from 1992. The novel was not backed by a major publisher, but by the two-man company X Press, which sold 12,000 copies via word of mouth. According to X-Press co-founder Steve Pope, Yardie was the first popular novel to be targeted at a black audience in England. He is also said to have ensured that many British bookstores set up sections only for literature on blacks. Yardie was adapted for the film by Brock Norman Brock and Martin Stellman . Yardie is a Jamaican name for gangsters, but also a paraphrase for Jamaicans who emigrated to Great Britain.
The film was produced by Robin Gutch and Gina Carter from Warp Films and jointly funded by Studiocanal, the BFI, BBC Films and Screen Yorkshire. Universal Music will produce and publish the soundtrack for the film through the Island Records label . The soundtrack was composed by Dickon Hinchliffe , the guitarist and violinist of the British band Tindersticks . The soundtrack to the film, which includes a total of 14 pieces of music, including by Yellowman , The Isley Brothers , Grace Jones , The Heptones and Skip Marley , was released for download on August 24, 2018 from Universal-Island Records.
It acts with Yardie to the directorial debut of Idris Elba , who is also featured in the film in a supporting role. Elba said, “I am interested in telling human stories with characters that are either graceful or flawed. With Yardie , audiences will see a movie that hopefully will mean something to people. I feel honored to be able to shoot the film in my hometown London and as a guest in Jamaica. ”Elba starred with the London-born actor Aml Ameen . The singer Tanika makes her debut as an actress in the film.
Production started in May 2017. The film was shot in London , the West London Film Studios located there and in Jamaica , for example in Kingston in June 2017 .
The film premiered on January 20, 2018 as part of the Sundance Film Festival . From February 16, 2018 was Yardie as part of the Berlin International Film Festival presented in the Panorama section. A first trailer was presented in the spring of 218. The film was released in cinemas in the United Kingdom on August 24, 2018. A theatrical release in the USA took place on March 15, 2019.

Age rating
In Germany it was approved by the FSK from the age of 16. The statement of reasons for the release states: “The plot is easy to understand for young people from the age of 16 and can be classified by them as a genre story that has nothing to do with their own reality. There are several scenes of violence , some of them drastic, and an act of revenge remains unpunished, but the violence is not sensationally played out and critically discussed in the film. "
Reviews
Fionnuala Halligan from screendaily.com says Aml Ameen and Shantol Jackson are a lovely couple and that the chemistry between the actors is good overall. Naomi Ackie proves her versatility in a supporting role. The plot may be rooted in the drug trade, Halligan added, but the reality is revenge when D starts a war in London.
