Summer of 84 is an American - Canadian horror film from 2018. Directed by François Simard , Anouk Whissel and Yoann-Karl Whissel (RKSS).

action

In the summer of 1984, four teenagers Davey Armstrong, Tommy "Eats" Eaton, Dale "Woody" Woodworth and Curtis Farraday were in the small town of Cape May, Oregon . The four friends only have girls in mind and pass the time with typical boy stuff. Among other things, they play a nocturnal catch game that runs according to ritualized rules.

But it's not as peaceful as the small town looks. The "Cape May Slayer", a serial killer who attacks teenagers in particular, is up to mischief. When Davey sees a photo of one of the missing teenagers on a milk carton, he believes he saw him playing a night game through a window in the house of his neighbor Wayne Mackey, a police officer, a few weeks ago. He reports it to his three friends and the four are now investigating Mackey on their own.

The evidence is growing against Mackey, he's hoarding dubious chemicals and soil, and he's got a suspicious garage in town. However, when the four are caught doing their research, Mackey presents the supposed killer he has arrested in the media. Davey's parents also find out about it and the four friends have to apologize to Mackey.

However, Davey remains convinced of Mackey's guilt. Davey, Woody and Nikki, the girl next door, break into Mackey's. In fact, they find a room locked with a padlock. A disturbing discovery follows: When they break into the room, they find a cruelly battered corpse lying in a bathtub, as well as a boy who is still alive and begs for help. With the overwhelming evidence, they can convict Mackey. A hastily convened nationwide manhunt for Mackey begins.

The following night, it turns out that the exposed serial killer Mackey was hiding in the attic of the Armstrong family home. While everyone is asleep, Mackey descends the ladder to numb Davey and Woody, who is staying with his friend, with a cloth. He then abducts the two boys to a nearby peninsula and hunts them in the dark. He kills Woody by cutting his neck. When he overpowers Davey, however, he does not kill him. Instead, he leaves him paranoid and announces that he will come for him at some point.

A little later, everyday life in the small town begins again. The three remaining friends are no longer in contact, the tree house has been torn down and the girl next door is leaving town.

background

Most of the film was shot in July 2017 in Vancouver , Canada. After Turbo Kid , it is the second feature film by the trio François Simard, Anouk Whissel and Yoann-Karl Whissel to become known as RKSS. Like its predecessor, the film contains numerous allusions to the 1980s. Among other things, a Polybius machine can be seen in the arcade , the teenagers play with walkie-talkies , use video cameras and the tree house is decorated with typical 1980s posters. In addition, the film contains numerous allusions to films with a similar plot, especially The Goonies , but also Das Fenster zum Hof and Disturbia . The synth soundtrack is also reminiscent of numerous 1980s films, especially those by John Carpenter .

The film premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival . He was then shown in many late performances. In Germany, the film had its premiere at the HARD: LINE festival in Regensburg , where it was shown as the opening film. It was then released on DVD on October 26, 2018.

Reviews

The film has been widely praised for its atmosphere and acting. On the other hand, the relatively slow narrative style, which should deter many horror fans, was criticized. In addition, the tension would suffer a little due to the slow build-up. It was also criticized that the film would scream retro, but that the characters were neglected.

Lucas Barwenczik comes to the following conclusion on Filmstarts.de :

“The quality of the numerous role models is therefore never achieved. That makes the many references a problem. They are reminiscent of the films that one would rather see right now. Where a director like Quentin Tarantino creates new cross-connections through quotations, “Summer Of '84” degrades itself to a footnote. To the weak last descendant of a once proud dynasty. After all, some of the horror scenes towards the end of the film are relatively exciting. The recent escalations rely a little too heavily on script twists, but are surprisingly consistent. It is difficult to deny your technical skills to the directing collective. This was already clear in the more successful previous film "Turbo Kid". It is to be hoped that in the future they will not move so well-trodden paths. They might even find new ones. Own. "
