His father Jerry works on a golf course but is quick to get fired for being inappropriately kind to customers and become a self-pitying alcoholic. Joe not only has to see his father sitting on the couch, he also has to watch his parents' marital breakdown.

When Jerry suddenly announces that he, like most other men from Great Falls, wants to go to the nearby mountains, where a huge forest fire is raging and the smoke is slowly settling in the city, his wife Jeanette is disappointed. Unemployed people are paid a dollar an hour to help fight the fire, and Jerry hops on a truck, leaving Jeanette and Joe alone, not knowing if he will ever return. From then on, she speaks to her son about her worries and feelings in a way that, although Joe is quite mature for his age, is nothing for a 14-year-old.

Jeanette takes a part-time job as a swimming instructor for the wealthy old Warren Miller, the town's car dealer. Miller is divorced, and Jeanette accepts his dinner invitation and drags Joe with her. Jeanette needs someone to take care of her and convinces herself to be attracted to Miller. Joe watches his mother start a relationship with him.

Reviews

So far, the film has won over 93 percent of all Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 7.7 out of a possible 10 points.

Owen Gleiberman of Variety stated in wildlife it go mainly about what happens during Jerry's absence, and this is told from the perspective of Joe: "You can see why [Paul] Dano , of the screenplay with his partner Zoe Kazan [. ..] was attracted to this material. ”Gleiberman added that seeing through Paul Dano's gaze made one wonder what comes next with a touch of fear and make growing up a kind of redemption.

Todd McCarth from The Hollywood Reporter particularly emphasizes the sensational acting performance of Ed Oxenbould in his review . At first glance, the young Australian looks rather nerdy, but more than anyone else he wears the film.

Simon Hadler from orf.at writes that the film is slow for today's viewing habits, and one has to be interested in the depths of interpersonal relationships in order not to find it lengthy every now and then, despite the breathtaking performance of the cast. Deno is interested - he wants to make more films about dysfunctional families. One can be curious. In order to make this story visible, the film family exploited the effects reporting without ever being suspected of overacting: “Oxenbould's gaze, for example, with which he looks at his parents when he speaks to them: there is love to be seen, but also respect , almost fear - as it was common in parent-child relationships at the time, plus worrying about what was happening and worrying about whether you were doing everything right yourself. ”It was impossible to pack so much emotion and thought-load into a single glance everyone, and we will hear a lot more from Oxenbould, said Hadler, but we can also look forward to further films by the director.
