The film is based on the novel We the Animals by Justin Torres, which was published in 2013 in a German translation by Peter Torberg under the title Wir Tiere .
Directed by Jeremiah Zagar , who together with Dan Kitrosser also adapted Torres' novel for the film. Nick Zammuto composed the film music .
The film premiered on January 20, 2018 as part of the Sundance Film Festival and was released in US cinemas on August 17, 2018. Screenings at the Hamburg Film Festival are planned for the end of September and the beginning of October 2019 .
