history

The band was formed in January 2013 by Isaac Howlett (vocals, composition) and Adam Relf (composition, production). The self-produced album Losing Touch in 2014 aroused the interest of the record label "Stars & Letters Records" from Brooklyn (USA). Four more titles have been added to the three existing ones. The resulting EP Throwing Stones was released in December of that year. Losing Touch was clicked more than 520,000 times on YouTube and listened to about two million times on Spotify .

The British artist and animator Richard Swarbrick shot a video for Liverpool FC , which was broadcast on the official team channel and which went viral and gained awareness of Empathy Test. Swarbrick used the song Kirrilee for another animated video entitled "The Cats of YouTube", which was viewed more than 180,000 times and used the song Last Night on Earth in an animated series about basketball for the broadcaster ESPN . In the United States, Kirrilee became the official soundtrack of The Murray Affair art fair, inspired by actor Bill Murray and held in San Francisco on August 8, 2014 . On September 22nd, an instrumental version of Here Is the Place became the official soundtrack to a video entitled “The Next Generation Asks World Leaders at UN: Why Not Act on Climate Change?” (The next generation asks world leaders: Why is there no action on climate change?). The short film was produced by The Climate Reality Project, with the participation of former US Vice President Al Gore , and was broadcast at the United Nations . In March 2015, the song Here Is the Place could be heard in the fourth season of the MTV series Catfish - Verliebte im Netz , which increased the band's popularity, especially in the USA.

Empathy Test had its first live appearance in London in September 2014, and its first international appearance in Dresden on December 6, 2014. It was also supposed to appear at the Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Leipzig. In 2016 Empathy Test toured Europe with the bands mesh and De / Vision . Furthermore, the band was on tour with VNV Nation for three shows in Germany.

The following year she toured again with mesh, this time in Denmark. She also performed at the “Planet Myer Day” (Germany) and “Electronic Winter Festival” (Sweden) festivals. Other festivals the band performed at in 2017 were Liverpool Sound City (UK), Amphi Festival (Germany), VNV Nation's Festival "Unter dem Himmel" (Germany), Infest Festival (UK), NCN Festival (Germany) and The Electric Dreams Weekender (UK). In December 2017 Empathy Test went on their first tour of Germany.

In 2017 the band decided to start a crowdfunding campaign via the PledgeMusic platform to produce their own albums Losing Touch Remastered and Safe from Harm . The initiative was very successful and reached 661% of the budgeted target in a short time.

In May 2018, Losing Touch again drew international attention to Empathy Test - this time in Latin America and Spain - when the song was featured in two episodes of the Spanish Netflix series Luis Miguel: la serie , a biopic about the life of the Mexican superstar of the 80s was heard. In the same year the band had more international appearances on the program: in Russia as support for De / Vision, the Festival Plage Noire (Germany), the Subcult Festival (Sweden) and the Terminus Festival in Canada, after they played again supported Covenant on a UK tour. In autumn they performed for the first time in Poland, at the Warsaw Dark Electro Festival, which was followed by another tour of their own in Germany.

In 2019 Empathy Test already played a few concerts with VNV Nation in Spain and the UK, followed by a tour in Germany with ten appearances as support for Covenant . She also played a double headline tour with the Canadian post-punk band Actors in the UK. Furthermore she played again at the Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Leipzig and at the M'era Luna Festival in Hildesheim.

During the live performances, singer Isaac Howlett is accompanied by Christina Lopez on drums and Elliott Berlin on keyboard, who stepped in after Samuel Winter-Quick left the band in June. A USA tour with the band Aesthetic Perfection is planned for September / October 2019 . After the USA tour, which was accompanied on keyboard by Angel Metro, Empathe Test hired a new keyboardist, Oliver Marson, who is an integral part of the band.
