Mesh is a synth pop - band from the English Bristol .

history

Mesh was founded by keyboardists Neil Taylor, Rich Silverthorn and Mark Hockings. Taylor and Silverthorn were already playing together when they met Mark Hockings at a concert in 1991 and from then on began to make music as Mesh. The roots of their music lie in the synth-pop of the 1980s, which is primarily reflected in an undeniable similarity to the sound of Depeche Mode . Catchy melodies, minimalist synth sounds and emotional singing form the substance of the songs.

The songwriting is mostly initiated by Silverthorn and / or Hockings, who at least develop the rough structure of the song. Hockings single-handedly writes the lyrics and then adds them to the song structure in the studio. Taylor only developed his creativity in the studio, was more of a practitioner, so to speak. Hockings took over the singer part after he was the only one who agreed to do so and also took the view that a lyricist had to sing his songs himself because he was the only one who really knew what his song was about.

The studio of Silverthorn's mother had to serve as the studio, which Mesh, equipped with numerous equipment, transformed into the "Urban Studios". This is where Mesh still produce their sound today. The demonstrations , however, came first in a rather moderate interest. It was only when the then new music magazine Future Music picked up three songs and pressed them onto their sampler that record companies showed interest. However, initial negotiations did not produce an acceptable result. So, without further ado, Mesh launched their own label Tolerance Records . Supported by their families, they began to distribute the EP Fragile on their own in August 1994 .

Memento Materia soon became aware of Mesh after The Body Project , an electronic music promotion company from Sweden, sent them a recording of Mesh. A short time later the contract was signed and the EP Fragile was re-released on the new label in early 1996. Mesh's first full-fledged album was released in the same year. Sales exceeded the band's expectations. The first single from the album You Didn't Want Me became a hit in numerous clubs.

With this success behind it, Mesh brought out an expanded new edition of Fragile -EP in 1997 for the European and American markets. She also released the single You Didn't Want Me on her label Jarrett Records, which is responsible for the US market . Jarrett now has a major contract with Navarre and in 1999 the album The Point at Which It Falls Apart was released worldwide. The newer works by Mesh move more and more away from minimalism and increasingly incorporate orchestral arrangements. The very poppy album Who Watches Over Me? from 2002 followed by the end of the year Fragmente 2 , a double album with remixes and hard to find mesh tracks.

In October 2006, Neil Taylor left the band for personal reasons.

style

The grouping is known for its mix of synthetic and acoustic influences and is often compared sonically to Depeche Mode , Nine Inch Nails and De / Vision .

The individual pieces usually seem suitable for the masses and combine hard and aggressive influences with catchy and melodic sounds. The mixture of very commercial appearing rhythms and the intense lyrics, which can also be understood politically, makes up a large part of the sound of Mesh and quickly led to the success of the first EP.
