Live and act

Franz Austeda studied philosophy , history , psychology and education at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate in 1949 ( dissertation : The epistemological concept of relativity). At the same time he passed the teaching examination for the subjects of history and philosophy and was initially a grammar school professor and grammar school director in Vienna. In 1955 he moved to the office of the City School Council for Vienna , where he last worked as a Real Councilor . He also taught as a lecturer at Vienna Adult Education Centers .

Philosophers, scientists and writers like Sir Karl Popper , Rupert Riedl and Ernst Jandl were his personal friends with whom he met regularly.

In 1983 he was a member of the Austrian UNESCO Commission .

Austeda was an advocate of freedom of thought and a proponent of a critical and rigorous scientific philosophy. He took the standpoint of an empirically-scientifically founded as well as epistemological (in the sense of Immanuel Kant ) secured critical positivism and represented an axiomatic characteristic of philosophy .

"A meaningful and fruitful philosophical discussion can only come about when everyone has regained understanding for the value of sharp epistemological analysis of concepts and statements (in the sense of neopositivism) and at the same time for the approach of Kantian criticism, i.e. for the efficiency of a critically well-founded one Positivism and Rationalism. "

- Thoughts on contemporary philosophy, part II. : The general secondary school. No. 2/1981, p. 45.

The focus of his epistemological analysis was the attempt to solve the "self-problem" of philosophy, i. That is, philosophizing to justify axiomatically the possibility and necessity of philosophizing. Furthermore, Austeda was an important representative of value relativism and advocated a separation of knowledge and belief . He called for a concept of tolerance that should be raised from the standpoint of worldview relativism. However, he restricted this insofar as intolerance does not deserve tolerance.
