Ira Glass (born March 3, 1959 in Baltimore , Maryland ) is an American producer, radio and television presenter . In 1995 he created the program This American Life , which he still moderates today.

Life

Glass was born in Baltimore and grew up Jewish . He studied at Northwestern University in Evanston and Brown University in Providence . In 1982 he completed his studies in linguistics . After his studies he worked as a reporter, author and presenter for the radio network National Public Radio (NPR) for various programs. At the age of 19, he had already worked as an intern at the NPR.

Since 1995, Glass has hosted and produced the radio program This American Life . It reaches over 500 stations every week and, as a podcast, more than 1.7 million listeners. The contributions of This American Life have won a number of awards, including six Peabody Award , and Glass himself has received several awards for his work, such as the George Polk Award , the Edward R. Murrow Award and the American Academy of Arts and letters . In 2014 he was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame .

From 2007 to 2009, Glass also hosted the television adaptation of This American Life of the same name on Showtime television . Despite the success of the show - it won three Emmy Awards in 2008 - Glass discontinued the TV series after two seasons in order to concentrate fully on the radio show.

Glass invited writer and humorist David Sedaris to present his essays on the NPR - an important starting point for Sedaris' career as an independent writer. Glass was also the producer for Sedaris' other essays for NPR.

In 1999 he wrote the book Radio: An Illustrated Guide with comic book author Jessica Abel . In 2007 he was editor of the short story anthology The New Kings of Nonfiction . He also wrote the lyrics for Tamara Staples ' photo book The Fairest Fowl (2001) and Dennis Wood's art book Everything Sings: Maps for a Narrative Atlas (2010).

In 2006 he worked as executive producer on Paul Feig's comedy Oh je, du Fröhliche ( Unaccompanied Minors ). The film is based on a true story that Susan Burton experienced and first told in TAL . In 2012 he produced the comedy film Sleepwalk with Me , the screenplay of which he wrote with comedian and actor Mike Birbiglia .

The composer Philip Glass is a cousin of his father.
