Tamar-kali (* in Brooklyn as Tamara Colletta Brown) is an American rock- singer-songwriter , guitarist and composer .

Life

Tamar-kali was born with the real name Tamara Colletta Brown in Brooklyn, New York, where she also grew up. Her father, who previously worked as a musician, bassist and band leader in various funk and soul bands, trained her musically at home as a child and taught her the basics of melody and harmony. With a Catholic upbringing, she enjoyed classical choral training from elementary school to high school. She spent most of her summers on the Sea Islands off the southeastern coast of the United States, and the Gullah culture that was widespread there had a particular impact on her sense of individuality, also because it reflected the DIY ethic in punk rock to which she went felt attracted.

She attended Adelphi University, where she studied English. Inspired by her longstanding love for strings, she founded Ensemble Psychochamber in 1998, an all-female instrumentalist string sextet that plays deconstructed versions of songs from her 5ive Piece Rock project as well as pieces specially arranged and composed for strings.

In late June 2020 she became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences .

Film compositions

For her first film music work for Mudbound by Dee Rees , Tamar-kali received the World Soundtrack Award in the category "Discovery of the Year". A special relationship had developed between Tamar-Kali and Rees since they are both black women in a male-dominated environment. Tamar-kali credits Rees with her career as a film musician. Since then she has composed the music for a number of other films, including Come Sunday by Joshua Marston , The Lie by Veena Sud , The Last What He Wanted Again from Rees, The Assistant by Kitty Green and Shirley by Josephine Decker, and worked her way into the film music industry , which is predominantly male, has a reputation.

Stage name and style

Her stage name refers to the Hindu goddess Kali , who stands for both violence and sexuality. Tamar-kali describes her music as aggressive "melodic rock" and deconstructed "chamber rock".
