Dee Rees (born November 30, 1976 in Nashville ) is an American film director and screenwriter . Together with Virgil Williams , Rees was nominated for an Oscar at the 2018 Academy Awards for the adaptation of the novel of the same name for their film Mudbound .

Life

Dee Rees was born in Nashville , Tennessee. The first film Rees made was Eventual Salvation , a documentary about an old woman who returns to her hometown of Monrovia. Rees made her directorial debut in a feature film in 2011 with the drama Pariah . Rees had previously published a short film with the same title. For the biographical television film Bessie , which dealt with the life of Bessie Smith , Rees was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in two categories in 2015 .

The epic film drama Mudbound , directed by Rees and presented at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2017 , received critical acclaim and Rees and Virgil Williams were nominated for an Oscar at the 2018 Academy Awards for the adaptation of the novel of the same name.
