Free Money is a Canadian comedy film with black humor directed by Yves Simoneau from 1998. The leading roles were played by Charlie Sheen and Marlon Brando .
action
Prison director Sorenson, known as the Swede, reluctantly marries his beloved twin daughters Inga and Liv, allegedly pregnant, to the good-for-nothing, Bud and Larry. Together with Judge Rausenberg, he makes his own laws and shoots a fugitive who is called a Turk when attempting to break out of prison. FBI agent Karen Polarski, the judge's daughter, is investigating this and previous similar cases. The Swede is sullen and quick-tempered. He has strict command over Bud and Larry in prison and at home. They have to do the housework, sex is only allowed once a month, and their father-in-law's trigger-fury makes them feel their safety is rightly threatened. The young men are looking for a way out of this dreary life and rob a money train. When Bud carelessly spends some money, he is arrested and sentenced by the judge to 20 years in state prison. He was beaten repeatedly in jail. Inga and Liv are now flirting with other boys. As a result, Larry, who works in the prison kitchen, knocks the director out and escapes with Bud. The awakening Swede wants to take them to the afterlife in a garbage compactor. But they are saved by the FBI agent who shoots the Swedes. He goes to prison, which is now run by a new director. Somewhere in South America, Bud and Larry are enjoying their new life with the money from the train robbery. Their joy is clouded when their friends introduce them to their corpulent father.
Reviews
It was criticized that the director did not use the potential of the many good actors.
- According to Cinema , "Yves Simoneau ( Nuremberg In the Name of Humanity ) staged his unoriginal , often embarrassing Fargo plagiarism without humor and charm."
- The lexicon of international films described the film as "a sometimes quite rough comedy with a good cast, in which Marlon Brando can once again give the portrait of the ' godfather '."
- www.tvtv.de praised Brando's theatrical performance and said that Donald Sutherland and Charlie Sheen also deliver an amusing and professional game and make the comedy a real hit .
Background information
The budget was about $ 30 million. Despite the many stars, the movie intended for the cinema was only shown on a small US cable channel.
There were television broadcasts in German-speaking countries, and VHS cassettes with a running time of around 90 minutes have been available since April 1999. An English DVD is available in the UK or USA. Kinowelt also published a German and English language DVD in 2007.
