The War at Home (German alternative title: Die Heimatfront ) is a feature film from 1996. Emilio Estevez acted as director and co-producer.

action

The Vietnam War veteran Jeremy Collier, haunted by his traumatic experiences in Vietnam , returns to his family in his hometown. Not understanding that his son has post-traumatic stress disorder, his father Bob demands that he return to the middle-class, small-town world. His mother Maurine treats him like a ten year old child and wants him to forget what happened. Only his sister Karen notices some of Jeremy's changes, but her father prevents her from helping her brother.

Conflict within the family escalates on Thanksgiving when Jeremy refuses to wear proper clothing and instead wears his combat uniform and medals. During the evening, after an argument, Jeremy points his gun at his father and explains his hatred of him, which was sparked by the fact that he did not want to give him money to flee to Canada before he began his military service .

During the conversation he is haunted by his experiences. He sees himself executing a Viet Cong again in the war . At first he does not feel able to do so, but then he recognizes his father's face and pulls the trigger. After these descriptions he collapses and is forcibly thrown out of the house by his father. The film ends with Jeremy tearfully buying a bus ticket.

criticism

The lexicon of international films judged that the film was cast with "solid actors". However, he concentrates "too much on the traumatized veteran" and leaves "the acting potential of the rest" unused. For this reason, "the melodrama gets a rather sentimental note, which is not given a relativizing counterweight."

success

The film was a commercial flop. At $ 3 million to produce, the film grossed only $ 43,000 due to lack of marketing from Disney and Touchstone Pictures.

The film was nominated three times for the ALMA Award in 1998 .
