The Echelon Conspiracy (original title Echelon Conspiracy , working title The Gift ) is an American action film from 2009 .

action

On a business trip to Bangkok, the young American computer scientist Max Peterson was sent a mobile phone with text messages that gave him instructions for a successful future.

Because of one of these text messages, Max extended his stay in Bangkok and avoided a plane crash. When a message advised him to buy shares in the Syzor company , which actually increased in value by 313% on the same day, Max trusts the text messages more and more and, on the instructions of the sender, flies to Prague to get money in a casino earn. There he met the Russian Yuri Malanin, who works as a taxi driver and identifies himself as a cell phone expert.

After several large wins on a one-armed bandit and blackjack , the casino's security chief John Reed, a former FBI employee, becomes aware of Max. Before Reed can grab him, however, the gambler is arrested by FBI agent and former colleague Dave Grant. It turns out that three other Americans had also received such a cell phone and each had a fatal accident after making quick money.

The NSA , for which Dave Grant also works, tries to find out who the sender of the text messages is through tracing. However, the result of the investigation leads the NSA into its own ranks and into its Echelon system. This system was supposed to get an upgrade , but this was prevented by the Senate , which did not agree to the approval of a total surveillance of all computers worldwide.

After an NSA murder attack on Max, John tries to find out who is behind the text messages with the help of John. To do this, the two travel to Moscow , where they meet with Yuri. He explains to the two that Echelon went into business for himself and predicted the future using probability calculations, including the crash of the plane and winnings in the casino. At the same time, Max and John meet Agent Grant again, who is now trying to stop the Echelon system with the two of them.

The Echelon system leads the group back to the USA, where it has built a new server farm with the help of the other three cell phone receivers , to which it is now being transferred with the help of Max. Max finds out that the Echelon system wants to upgrade itself to get total control of all the computers in the world. Contrary to the wishes of the NSA director, Max stops the upgrade at the last second by teaching Echelon that it is itself the greatest threat to the freedom of US citizens. The system then switches itself off.

Max travels to Paris with Kamila, the agent who has meanwhile saved his life , to cash the check for three million euros that he won while gambling in the casino. Raymond Burke, meanwhile, has to answer to the Senate for the disaster in which the Echelon system shut down.

In Moscow, Yuri Malanin, who holds the rank of captain in the Russian secret service , meets his commanding officer . He is commended for doing his job. Yuri fears that the Americans will try again shortly to build a comparable surveillance system. But for now, they would have helped the Americans make the right decision, he sums up. Then Yuri adds that he at least hopes so - and turns off his mobile phone.

Reviews

“With 'The Echelon Conspiracy', director Greg Marcks was able to assemble an interesting cast to stage a brisk but unfortunately completely unbelievable conspiracy thriller. The intrinsically interesting and often intelligently filmed subject of total surveillance fails here because of an immeasurable sequence of logical inconsistencies and unbelievable premises that spoil the pleasure of the film. The crowning glory is the super kitschy Hollywood happy ending. While the look, the action and the scenery of the film are appealing, the characters in particular do not have their own profiles and remain frighteningly clichéd. "

- Dirk Hoffmann

“The story suffers from technical nonsense and increasing logic holes. The pennäler-like helpless hero is little suited to hold together the increasingly confused story. Tamara Feldman, on the other hand, is a bright spot as a tough agent with feeling. Conclusion: The signal remains diffuse because of the sheer echo. "
