Until it was renamed, the ship was called Robert Hunter (photo from 2007)

The ship was built in 1974/75 by the Hall, Russell & Company shipyard in Aberdeen as the fisheries protection ship Westra of the Scottish Fisheries Protection Agency . In 2003 the Westra was decommissioned and initially launched . In 2005 the Sea Shepherd organization acquired the ship and had it converted for their own purposes. A helicopter deck and ship cranes for the watering of two RIBs were installed and the fair and berths were adapted to the needs of the organization. Sea Shepherd initially renamed the ship Robert Hunter . Robert Hunter was a Canadian who together with the founder of Sea Shepherd , Paul Watson , in the early days of Greenpeace was active. The ship was renamed from Robert Hunter to Steve Irwin in December 2007 in honor of the documentary filmmaker Steve "The Crocodile Hunter" Irwin, who died in 2006 .

In January 2007, following a complaint from Japan, the ship was removed from the UK shipping register. It was then registered in the Netherlands on October 8, 2007 . Most recently, the ship, which is mostly manned by volunteers, was involved in actions against Japanese whalers in the South Pacific in March 2012.

The ship is powered by two engines. These are twelve-cylinder machines with an output of 1,600 kW (2,100 hp). It has a fuel capacity of 200 tons.

In December 2018, the Sea Shepherd Global board of directors decided to part with Steve Irwin. It is broken down under international labor and environmental regulations.
