Bob Givens

Robert Herman "Bob" Givens (born March 2, 1918 in Hanson , Kentucky , † December 14, 2017 in Burbank ) was an American animator and cartoonist . He is considered to be the inventor of Bugs Bunny .

Life

Bob Givens was born as a twin in Hanson in 1918. His father was a horse breeder . The family moved to southern California because of a health problem in their father . Bob Givens attended high school in Alhambra , which he graduated in 1936. In the following months he worked as a freelance artist. From 1937 he worked on the recommendation of his old classmate Hardie Gramatky in the Walt Disney Studios .

During his time at Disney, Bob Givens worked as an animation reviewer, mostly for short films. Later also on the film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs .

After his time at Disney, he worked for Warner Bros , mostly under Chuck Jones and Tex Avery . For the cartoon The Hare Trap , Avery Givens commissioned a further design of a rabbit, which had previously been designed by the designers Ben Hardaway and Charles Thorson , but which in Avery's eyes still appeared "too cute". Givens created the first version of Bugs Bunny. This version was improved two years later by Robert McKimson .

In 1942, Bob Givens was drafted into the military by World War II. There he shot military training films with Rudolf Ising . He returned to Warner Bros. in the 1950s . He worked on many Looney Tunes with films, especially on the figure Daffy Duck , as well as Tom and Jerry productions and in the 90s at Garfield and Friends .

Bob Givens died of acute respiratory failure at the age of 99 .
