The Rabbit Trap is an American animated short directed by Tex Avery from 1940. It was the first animated film appearance by Bugs Bunny .
action
Elmer Fudd goes hare hunting. He comes across a rabbit trail and follows it to a rabbit hole, places a carrot in front of it and is amazed when a hand comes out of the hole, feels the carrot and quickly disappears back into the rabbit hole together with the carrot. While Elmer Fudd is still puzzling over carrots coming and going and wants to spot the hare in the hole, the hare comes out of a second hole and joins him. He only realizes late that the carrot-eating biped standing in front of him is a rabbit. The hunt begins, if only briefly. Soon the hare is behind Elmer and covers his eyes and the hunter only slowly comes to terms with who is covering his eyes. A little later, an elaborate rabbit trap with a centered carrot catches a skunk , while the hare has one more carrot.
The rabbit gives Elmer Fudd one last chance: He lets him shoot at him. The hunter pulls the trigger and the hare dies a theatrical death. When Elmer Fudd reproaches himself for being a rabbit killer, the rabbit jumps up, gives him a cigar and hops away. Elmer Fudd rushes almost madly out of the forest. The hare is sure that the hunter is crazy, blows on his carrot like a flute and disappears between the trees.
production
The rabbit trap was released on July 27, 1940 as part of the Warner Bros. animated film series Merrie Melodies .
The Rabbit Trap is the first film to feature Bugs Bunny. Although Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny remain unnamed in the film, they were already presented as Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny in the following short film Elmer's Pet Rabbit (January 1941).
