Paul Driessen
Paul Driessen (born March 30, 1940 in Nijmegen , Netherlands ) is a Dutch animator .
Life
Driessen attended the Art School in Utrecht until 1964 , where he studied graphic design and illustration. In 1964 he came to the animation studio Cinecartooncentre in Hilversum , where, among other things, he animated commercials for Dutch television. George Dunning noticed him and hired him as one of the animators for the Beatles cartoon film Yellow Submarine . The film was released in 1968. Two years later, Driessen finished his first animated short, The Story of Little John Baile . He went to Canada in 1970 and settled in Montréal . After working with Gerald Potterton on the feature- length film Tiki Tiki , Driessen became a member of the National Film Board of Canada in 1972 . From the mid-1970s, Driessen commuted between Canada and the Netherlands and published short animated films in both countries.
From 1985 to 2005 Driessen taught animation at the Kunsthochschule Kassel . His students included Daniel Stieglitz and Nils Loof as well as the later Oscar winners Christoph Lauenstein ( Balance ), Tyron Montgomery ( Quest ) and Thomas Stellmach ( Quest ). Their success led to Driessen's continued employment in Kassel, who in the meantime should be dismissed due to his liberal teaching methods.
Driessen, who also published several comic books, lives in Montréal and France. One of his greatest successes is the Dutch production 3 Misses , which appeared in 1998 and was nominated for an Oscar in the “ Best Animated Short Film ” category. Like all of his films, 3 Misses also dispenses with dialogue. Critics regard Driessen as "the great master of animation" and as "one of the recognized masters of animation and one of the most prominent filmmakers".
