3 Misses is a Dutch animated short film directed by Paul Driessen from 1998.

action

Three scenes of life and death play out:

A woman falls from a skyscraper and screams so loud that a man in another skyscraper can hear it. He wants to rush to her help, but there are numerous problems: The front door is locked, but his wife will soon open it. In the elevator a beefy man wants to go to the top floor, so that the man gets out again and runs down the numerous steps. In front of the door, a current in the car prevents him from crossing the street, but the man pretends to be a blind man and is able to cross the street. In the end, however, he is wrong and the woman falls to the ground right next to him. A prince on a horse appears and chokes at the sight of her.

In the Wild West, a woman has been tied up on the rails and is crying out for help, especially as a train is approaching. A cowboy hears it not far and wants to go to the rescue, but his horse has disappeared. He follows him, reading traces, meets a cowboy who invites him to a duel and Indians, finds his horse and meets a herd of cattle crossing just before the rails. He pretends to be a blind man and the cattle let him pass. When he arrives at the rails, he quickly switches a switch and the train coming from the left is now diverted. At the same time, a train coming from the right is mistakenly directed onto the rails on which the woman is lying, and she is run over. A prince on a horse appears and is shocked.

In Wonderland, the seven dwarfs notice that the evil stepmother is getting closer to Snow White's house with a poisoned apple. Seven of them rush off, but are gradually decimated: The first dwarf is run over by a caveman ball, the second is picked up by Little Red Riding Hood , which in turn is eaten by the wolf, the third falls asleep in an enchanted field, the fourth collides with it Cinderella running away from the ball and losing her shoe due to the collision. The dwarf turns into a mouse and a prince comes and picks up the shoe. The fifth is confronted with a giant and tries to defeat him with a slingshot, but shoots himself in the process. The sixth and seventh dwarfs come to a torrent and the sixth dwarf is brought by Puss in Boots to save his master swimming in the river . The seventh dwarf pretends to be blind and the water now divides in front of him. In the last second, the dwarf succeeds in bringing down the evil stepmother not far from Snow White's house, but the apple rolls up to the door and bumps loudly. Snow White eats the apple and a little later lies dead like in the coffin. A prince on a horse appears and the dwarf is delighted. However, he does not kiss Snow White, but just tries to put Cinderella's shoe on. In the end, it is the dwarf who kisses Snow White awake and a little later disappears into the coffin with her again. Both close the coffin lid.

production

The film premiered in November 1998 at the Holland Animation Film Festival. Especially in the dwarf episode, it contains numerous allusions to fairy tales, including The Wizard of Oz (Sleep in the Enchanted Field), Cinderella , Snow White , The Brave Little Tailor (Fight against the Giant), Puss in Boots and Little Red Riding Hood .

The title 3 Misses plays with the ambiguity of the word Miss (young lady or failure).

3 Misses won the Buster's Short Film Award at the Buster International Children's Film Festival in 2000 and the Mike Gribble Peel of Laughter Award at the Ottawa International Film Festival in 2000 .

3 Misses was nominated for an Oscar in the category “ Best Animated Short Film ” in 2000, but could not prevail against The Old Man and the Sea .
