Francesco Buhagiar
Francesco Buhagiar (born September 7, 1876 in Qrendi , Malta , † June 27, 1934 in San Ġiljan , Malta) was a Maltese judge and former Prime Minister .
He completed his law studies at the Royal University of Malta in 1901, obtained his doctorate in law and then worked as a lawyer. As such, he soon became a recognized professional in civil and commercial law.
After the introduction of the right to self-government, Buhagiar was elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1921 and 1924 as a representative of the "Unione Popolare Maltese" (UPM). On October 13, 1922, he was appointed Minister of Justice in the cabinet of Joseph Howard to succeed Alfredo Caruana Gatto .
Exactly one year later, on October 13, 1923, he was appointed second Prime Minister of Malta to succeed Howard. After the failure of the coalition between the UPM and the Labor Party on January 2, 1924, he formed a minority government until Parliament was dissolved in April 1924. During this time, he was also Minister of Finance and Minister for the Ports. Even when the UPM emerged from the June 1924 general election with only 10 seats in the Legislative Assembly, Buhagiar was tasked with forming the government. From June to September 22, 1924 he was again prime minister of a minority government.
On September 22, 1924, he resigned as Prime Minister and was replaced by Ugo Pasquale Mifsud . He was then a judge at the Supreme Court of Malta until his death.
