Elena Arzak (born July 4, 1969 in San Sebastián , Basque Country Autonomous Community , Spain ) is a Basque star chef . Together with her father, Juan Mari Arzak , she is the head chef of the three-star restaurant Arzak and was named the best head chef in the world in 2012.

life and career

Elena Arzak started helping in her family's restaurant, the Arzak , at the age of 11 , becoming the fourth generation of her family to work there. Her father is Juan Mari Arzak, who initially worked under his mother Francisca Arzak in the family-owned "Arzak" founded in 1897, but then became head chef himself. Her mother Maite Arzak also works in the restaurant.

Her father sent her abroad to study in other restaurants after attending hotel school in Lucerne , Switzerland. In 1989 she worked for six months at “Le Gavroche” in London under Albert Roux and at the side of Michel Roux Jr., who was also doing an apprenticeship at the time. She also learned at “La Maison Troisgros”, at Le Louis XV under Alain Ducasse and at the “ Pierre Gagnaire ” restaurant . Then she returned to Spain, where she worked in Ferran Adrià's "elBulli" .

In 2011 she was nominated for the Veuve Clicquot Prize as the world's best cook, but this was awarded to the French chef Anne-Sophie Pic . In 2012, Arzak won the award.

Elena Arzak is married and has two children, Nora and Mateo.
