The women's football department of FC Barcelona from Spain has existed since 2002 and is currently one of the top teams in national women's football. In the 2020/21 season , FC Barcelona won their first Champions League title.

history

Club Femení Barcelona , founded in 1988, was one of the founding clubs of the Spanish football championship for women that same year. In 1994 he was able to record his first title win by winning the Copa de la Reina , but in 1996 he was relegated to the second division. In 2001 it was incorporated into FC Barcelona as a new club section. The team has been back in the Primera División since 2004, with a brief interlude in the 2007/08 season in the second division.

From 2010, Barcelona took over the sporting dominance in Spanish women's football, which has been challenged by Atlético Madrid since 2015 . In the last meeting in the cup final on June 2, 2018, Barcelona won 1-0 with a goal from Mariona Caldentey in the last minute of stoppage time. In the UEFA Women's Champions League , Barcelona achieved the best performance of a Spanish representative in this competition to date by reaching the semi-finals in the 2016/17 season . In 2018/19 the result could be increased and the final was reached for the first time, but it was lost 4-1 to defending champion Olympique Lyon . Both clubs are the only ones so far where women and men have reached the semi-finals of the Champions League in one season. Lyon achieved this in 2009/10, Barcelona in 2018/19. In both cases, only the women made it to the final, but lost it.

On May 16, 2021, FC Barcelona won the final of the 2020/21 Champions League at Gamla Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg against FC Chelsea 4-0. This makes FC Barcelona the only club that has won the Champions League for both women and men.
