The women's football department of the Espanyol Barcelona sports club (officially: Reial Club Deportiu Espanyol de Barcelona ) from Spain was founded in 1970.

history

Among the major clubs in Spain, RCD Espanyol is one of the pioneers of women's football. As early as 1970 he founded a corresponding club section, initially under the name Club Deportivo Español Femenino , which he has maintained uninterruptedly since then. In 1988 the club was one of the founding members of the national women's football championship.

In the first decade after the turn of the millennium, Espanyol experienced its most successful phase, which, in addition to three runners-up championships, also included the only championship title to date in the 2005/06 season. In the subsequent competition of the UEFA Women's Cup 2006/07 , the club reached the second round. From 2010, Espanyol gradually lost its supremacy in Catalonia to rising local rivals FC Barcelona .
