The women's football department of the sports club Athletic Bilbao (officially: Athletic Club ) from Spain has existed since 2002.
history
The origins of Athletics women's football department go back to the Maiona de Sondika players ' association , which was founded in the municipality of Sondika in 1970 and which was incorporated into the local club CD Sondika in the 1980s . From 1993 CD Sondika belonged to the first division of the Spanish championship until the club separated from its women's team after the end of the 1999/2000 season for financial reasons. The homeless players founded the Leioa Euskadiko Futbol Federakundea in Leioa , which was incorporated into the Athletic Club of Bilbao on January 1, 2002 as a new club section .
In their first season in 2002/03, the women of Athletic won the first of a total of five championship titles and thus established a sporting dominance in Spanish women's football together with Rayo Vallecano and Levante UD in the first decade after the turn of the millennium . After 2010, Athletic had to line up behind the new supremacy of FC Barcelona and Atlético Madrid , which they could only break through in the 2015/16 season.
The personnel policy of the women's section is subject to the association's statutes, Athletics, according to which only players from the Basque Country , including Navarre and the French Basque Country , are required.
