The Río Guadalhorce is an approx. 166 km long coastal river in the southern Spanish province of Málaga . It is the longest and - together with the Río Guadiaro - the most water-rich river in the province.
course
The Río Guadalhorce has its source at the Puerto de los Alazores mountain pass in the Sierra de Alhama on the border with the province of Granada ; it drains the Antequera basin and flows west of Málaga into the Mediterranean Sea . In its course it forms the approximately 7 km long Desfiladero de los Gaitanes gorge , a natural park that separates the Hoya de Málaga ("Pan of Málaga") from the Antequera valley. The last section of its course is the valley and comarca of the same name of the Valle de Guadalhorce . The mouth of the Guadalhorce was laid out in two arms and serves as a retreat for migratory birds and protection against flooding.
Reservoirs
It contributes to the water and energy supply of Malaga through the reservoirs Gobantes, Paredones, Gaitanejo and El Chorro. Another power plant is to be built at its mouth. The city of Málaga water purification plant is also located near the estuary.
