The Gulf of Albay is a large sea bay in the southeast of the island of Luzon , Philippines . It is a sea bulge in the southwest of the Philippine Sea and extends on the east coast of the Bicol Peninsula . It is separated from the Gulf of Lagonoy in the north by the islands of Rapu-Rapu , Batan , and Cagraray Island . The gulf covers an area of 747.50 km² and is shaped like a boot. The coastline of the Gulf of Albay is characterized by a mixture of mangrove forests , rocky coasts and sandy beaches.

The Gulf of Albay is considered to be a productive fishing area on the east coast of the Philippines, but it is endangered by dam breaches and overflowing the Tailings Lake of the gold mine on Rapu-Rapu Island . In front of the coastline are numerous smaller coral reefs and seagrass beds , around which the neighboring communities have partially established marine protected areas.

On the west coast of the Gulf is the Component City Legazpi and on the south coast Sorsogon City , both have large ports and are the capitals of the provinces of Albay and Sorsogon . The majestic Mayon volcano rises in the western hinterland and the Pocdol Mountains lie in the southwestern hinterland .
