Johnny Stein

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John "Johnny" Stone (* 15. June 1891 in New Orleans , † the thirtieth September 1962 in New Orleans) was an American jazz - drummer and bandleader , who with Stein's Dixie Jass band was among the pioneers of the early jazz.

Johnny Stein founded a jazz band in New Orleans in 1915 with musicians who, like him, had played with Papa Jack Laine , the cornetist Nick LaRocca , the trombonist Eddie Edwards , the pianist Harry Ragas and the clarinetist Alcide Nunez . In 1916/17 Stein and his band visited Chicago, where they performed in Schiller's Cafe as Stein's Dixieland Jass Band . After three months the band broke up and the four musicians around Stein formed the original Dixieland Jazz Band - but without Johnny Stein, with a new drummer Tony Sbarbaro and under the direction of LaRocca . Stein himself moved to New York with another formation and took part in recording sessions for the Original New Orleans Jazz Band in 1918 and 1919 .
