Original New Orleans Jazz Band

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Original New Orleans Jazz Band was one of the first hot jazz bands to make recordings. The band, which consisted mainly of musicians from New Orleans , was formed on the initiative of Jimmy Durante in New York City , where it was popular in the late 1910s.

Some of the musicians in the quintet, which was initially led by cornet player Frank Christian , came from Papa Jack Laine's band . The line-up was followed by the original Dixieland Jazz Band : the front line consisted of a cornet, clarinet ( Achille Baquet ) and trombone ( Frank Lhotak or possibly Miff Mole ); the rhythm section was formed by the pianist Jimmy Durante and on the drums Johnny Stein or in March 1919 possibly Deacon Loyacano .

The band was active in three recording sessions between November 1918 and March 1919 for the Okeh Records and Gennett Records label . Further recordings that were made for Emerson Records were not released. Durante, who took over the management of the band in 1920, renamed it Jimmy Durante's Jazz Band and made further recordings with it. Cornetists were now Alfred Laine and Harry Gluck ; Jeff Loyacano joined as trombonist .
