Sorsogon City is a component city and capital of the Philippine province of Sorsogon in the administrative region V, Bicol . It has 168,110 inhabitants (August 1, 2015 census) who live in 64 barangays . Sorsogon City was granted the status of a major city in the Philippines on December 16, 2000.

The city is known as the gateway to the southern Philippines . It is an important port for ferries, passengers, buses and trucks from the island of Samar on the island of Luzon translate. This makes the city an important link on the Marharlika Highway . The area where Sorsogon City is located is an ancient settlement area in the southern Bicol region. 3,000 year old artifacts and traces of settlement were found in a cave in Bacon .
