The Pan-Philippine Road (also known as the Maharlika Highway ) is a 3,500 km long network of roads, bridges and ferry services that connects the islands of Luzón , Samar , Leyte and Mindanao in the Philippines . It represents the main artery of the country and connects Laoag City in the north (via Manila , Legazpi City , Tacloban City and Davao City ) with Zamboanga City in the south of the archipelago. In the Asian trunk road project it has the road number AH26 .

Creation

The road was commissioned in 1965 with the intention of the government to be able to boost agricultural production through the road network in connection with further road construction projects and the resulting lower transport costs. In addition, it was promised a stronger social and economic development outside the big city centers, as well as an increase in industrial production for the domestic and foreign markets. The street was built and maintained through loans and grants from foreign institutions, such as the World Bank .

A central section is the San Juanico Bridge , which connects the islands of Samar with Leyte. It is the longest bridge in the country and is considered an architectural gem. The road network was renewed and expanded in 1997 with the support of the Japanese government, which gave the road the name Filipino-Japanese Friendship Road .

In 1998, the Ministry of Tourism declared 35 sections of the street to be "Panorama Street", which represent special sights for tourists and travelers.
