Pilar is a Filipino municipality in the province of Sorsogon . It has 74,564 inhabitants (August 1, 2015 census) who lived in 49 barangays . Pilar belongs to the first income bracket of the communities in the Philippines. It is located about 36 km southwest of the provincial capital Sorsogon City at the exit of the Ticao Canal. Its neighboring communities are Castilla in the east, Donsol in the west and the communities in the province of Albay in the north.
The climate in Pilar is designated as Type II with the modified Coronas classification used in the Philippines . Rainfalls occur all year round, with the months of November to January being the rainiest. The Bicol region is located within the Typhoon Belt in the Philippines.
The first settlements in the municipality emerged in the 16th century, and a large shipyard was built on the island of Bagatao. On it were galleons built in the trade have been used with the South American Spanish colonies.
