The Calamian Islands consist of 128 islands and belong to the province of Palawan in the west of the Philippines .
geography
In the northeast, the archipelago borders the Mindoro Strait with the Nanga Islands and the Apo Reef , behind which lies the large Philippine island of Mindoro .
The largest island in the group is Busuanga in the north with the island of Dimipac in the northwest, the second largest island Culion in the south, and Dicabaito even further to the south . In the southwest are the islands of Bulalacao and Coron .
geology
The islands in the archipelago form characteristic rock walls, which are typically vertically corrugated due to erosion , falls, towers, pointed needles, roofs and caves. The karst limestone forms bizarre, eroded, steep mountain slopes, formed 260 million years ago and unfolded 60 million years ago. Particularly eroded are: Coron, Sangat and Black Island .
Flora and fauna
The 34,000 hectare " Calauit Game Preserve and Wildlife Sanctuary " is located on the island of Busuanga . It is a private nature reserve and an open zoo with 70 giraffes and numerous other African animals such as zebras and impalas. You can go on a “safari” like in Africa. This is where the largest population of calamian deer can be found . The island of Coron is a protected area, the Coron Island Protected Area covers the entire island.
Politics & Tourism
The islands form a settlement area of the Tagbanuwa tribe . The Coron Bay is a world-famous diving area between the islands of Coron, Busuanga and Culion.
