Busuanga is the largest northern island in the Palawan District ( Philippines ). It belongs to the Calamian archipelago .

geography

The island has an area of 890 km². It is over 64 km long from Abanaban Point in the northwest to Bocao Point in the southeast, with a maximum width of 26 km. In the northwest lies the Calauit Peninsula. The highest point is the Tundalara with 640 meters in the east.

The island is divided into the municipalities of Busuanga (western third) and Coron (eastern part). These communities also include smaller islands on the island of Busuanga.

In the northeast, Busuanga borders the Mindoro Strait with the Nanga Islands and the Apo Reef , behind which lies the main Philippine island of Mindoro . To the south are the islands of Culion , Bulalacao and Coron .

The identical names of some places and islands today are somewhat confusing. There is the island of Busuanga with the towns of Old Busuanga, New Busuanga and Coron. Coron Bay and the island of Coron are within sight south of Coron.

The name Busuanga comes from an old Chinese trade language (9th century): Paki-nung, the Calamien were called Kia-ma-yan (13th / 14th century: Kaimayen).
