The wildlife reserve Calauit Game Preserve and Wildlife Sanctuary is located 350 km northeast of Puerto Princesa , the capital of the province of Palawan , on the island of Busuanga in the Philippines . It was established on August 31, 1976 when Presidential Decree 1578 came into force. When it was founded, 200 families had to be relocated. The game reserve is the only nature reserve in Southeast Asia in which large African game has been established, so you can go on safari in the game reserve .

The Calauit Game Preserve and Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the northwest of the island of Busuanga on the Calauit Peninsula, at the exit of the Mindoro Strait to the South China Sea . It covers 3400 hectares and is a combined game reserve and marine reserve . The vegetation on the peninsula consists of extensive flat rainforests and savannas ; extensive mangrove forests and mud flats lie on the coast . Off the coast are numerous coral reefs , in which a large number of rare animal species, such as the dugong ( Dugong dugong ), live.

The giraffe ( Giraffa camelopardalis ), the plains zebra ( Equus quagga ), impala antelopes ( Aepyceros melampus ), the bushbuck ( Tragelaphus scriptus ) and the waterbuck ( Kobus ellipsiprymnus ) have been successfully introduced to large African mammals . The calamian deer ( Axis calamianensis ), the Palawan stink badger ( Mydaus marchei ) and the binturong ( Arctictis binturong ) live among native mammals in the wildlife reserve. The endemic amphibians include the frog species Polypedates macrotis and Rhacophorus everetti .

The gray island pigeon ( Ducula pickeringii ), the Palawan spatula- tailed parrot ( Prioniturus platenae ) and the Palawan hornbill ( Anthracoceros marchei ) live on the peninsula from the avifauna . The rare snow heron ( Egretta eulophotes ) visits the game reserve during the winter months.
