The Marinduque Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the island province of Marinduque in the Philippines . The nature reserve was established with the entry into force of Decree 696 on August 17, 2004 and was included in the appendix of the Philippine Biosphere Protection Act (NIPAS). It is in the territory of the municipalities of Gasan , Santa Cruz , Buenavista , Boac and Torrijos . The nature reserve covers an area of 8,827.96 hectares and is located in the center of the island, north of the Malindig volcano . The area is very remote and there are no paved roads leading into the nature reserve .
The topography of the nature reserve is described as gently undulating mountainous land and slopes down into the coastal plains in the west and east. The area is assigned to climate type IV, with a dry season from January to May, the rest of the year from June to November can sometimes be heavier rains. The annual rainfall is 2,030 mm / m².
A variety of animals such as the giant bark rat ( Phloeomys cumingi ) live in this nature reserve . The Philippine pustular pig ( Sus philippensis ) is now considered to be extinct on the island. From the bat genus, there are records of the subspecies Hipposideros pygmaeus , Eonycteris robusta and Rhinolophus rufus . The amphibian frog species Rana magna macrocephala and Kaloula conjuncta are said to occur in the area.
Of the avifauna , observations have been made of the Philippine duck ( Anas Luzonica ), the Luzon spatula- tailed parrot ( Prioniturus luconensis ) and the red- faced cockatoo ( Cacatua haematuropygia ).
