The Coron Iceland Protected Area ( reserve island of Coron ) is situated about 330 km northeast of Puerto Princesa , the capital of the province of Palawan , on the island of Coron in the Philippines . It was established on June 5, 1998 with the entry into force of the Republic Act 7611 issued by the Palawan Council for Substainable Development to create the protected homeland for the Tagbanuwa tribe on an area of 222.48 km². The area includes Coron Island, large parts of Coron Bay and other marine areas where the Tagbanuwa have their traditional fishing grounds. This area is administered by the Tagbanuwa, which gives it semi-autonomous status.
This was preceded by the establishment of a national reserve on July 2, 1967 (Proclamation 219), followed by the establishment of a tourist zone and a marine reserve in 1978, the establishment of a mangrove reserve (Proclamation 2152) and the first establishment of a home country for the Tagbanuwa tribe in 1990 on an area of 77.48 km². All of these safeguards have been brought together in Republic Act 7611.
The island of Coron is located in the archipelago of the Calamian Islands and consists of karstified limestone that was formed during the Jurassic Age . The erosion gave the island its characteristic appearance with towering mountain ranges, rocky cliffs and deep gorges. In the middle of the island is the Kayangan Lake; six other smaller lakes are scattered across the island. On the coast there are white sand and pebble beaches, mangrove forests and smaller mud flats that are overlooked by cliffs up to 300 meters high .
