The Mount Guiting-guiting Natural Park is a Philippine nature reserve . It is located in the center of the island of Sibuyan in the Romblon province and covers an area of 157 km².

History of the park

The reserve was established on February 20, 1996 by Presidential Decree 746. It bears the name of the highest peak in the Sibuyan Island Mountains, Guiting-guiting , which reaches a height of 2058  m above sea level. The spelling in the local Ilongo language is Guitingguitin , which translates as “saw tooth” and alludes to the shape of the summit.

geography

The nature reserve includes the four high peaks of the island, the Nailog mountain ( 811  m ) in the northwest, the Guiting-guiting ( 2058  m ), the Sibuyan ( 2050  m ), both in the center, and the Conico ( 1224  m ) in the southeast. The flanks of the Inselgebirge are very steep and partly inaccessible to humans. The sources of the rivers Pauala , Dulangan , Agutay , Campalong and Canloay are located in the national park .

geology

The island of Sibuyan was formed when two geotectonic micro plates collided , the Palawan plate and the Philippine plate , which lifted the Romblon archipelago out of the sea. Most of the island in the center consists of ophiolite rock, the eastern part consists of metamorphic rocks and the northwest of volcanic basalts . The coastal area in the north and south of the island consists of alluvial sand and sedimentary rock .

Flora and fauna

The nature reserve covers around 140 km² of forests, which make up around 33% of the island's land area. The protection of these forest areas was the primary goal when establishing the nature reserve. A total of 4 vegetation zones are described on guiting-guiting: Flatland rainforest consisting of wing fruit plants covers an altitude band from 200 to 900 meters above sea level. This is followed by a mountain forest above 700 meters above sea level, followed by mountain rainforest and heather. In the summit region of Guiting-guiting and Sibuyan there is an extensive grassland.

A total of 54 endemic plant species were discovered in the area of the nature reserve . There are no larger mammals on Sibuyan. There are only one species of fruit bat , one species of tube-nosed bat and four species of rodents . The bird fauna includes the Philippine duck , the red-necked lily (Todiramphus winchelli) , the sky flycatcher (Hypothymis coelestis) and the spotted fruit pigeon (Ducula carola) .
