Sibuyan is an island in the Romblon Province, in the central part of the Philippines' archipelago . It is considered a green pearl in the center of the Sibuyan Sea of the same name , as the island is completely protected. Mount Guiting-guiting Natural Park takes up a third of the island's area with 157 km² and large areas of the coastal plains are designated as mangrove protection areas.
geography
Sibuyan belongs to the Romblones archipelago , which consists of thirteen islands. The island has an area of 465 km², according to other information 499 km². The two mountain peaks of Guiting-guiting , with 2058 m, and Sibuyan , with 2050 m, dominate the topography of the island. In the western part of the island lies the lower mountain Nailog .
Six kilometers to the west is Romblon Island , Masbate to the east and Panay to the south .
administration
The island is divided into the three municipalities Cajidiocan , Magdiwang , San Fernando . The island had a population of 56,541 on August 1, 2007. The largest barangay is Taclobo on the south coast in the municipality of San Fernando, with a population of 4097 people (2000 census).
Incidents
The Princess of the Stars ferry had ten tons of the toxic insecticide endosulfan on board when it fell into a typhoon on June 22, 2008 off Sibuyan and sank.
