Goethe Monument (Aš)

Goethe monument

The Goethe Monument in is a reminder of several stays by the poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe at the toll limit of the city and the greeting by dignitaries during his travels from Weimar via Hof (Saale) and Hazlov to the West Bohemian baths.

The market fountain from 1867 was redesigned as a Goethe monument and unveiled at a Goethe anniversary celebration on August 28, 1932. Designs and sketches are exhibited in the Aš City Museum.

Due to road construction measures such as the creation of a roundabout at the intersection of Moravská, Studentská and Saská, the fountain with statue was dismantled in 2008 and stored in a depot for restoration by experts. During dismantling, a glass container with postcards, newspapers, coins and documents from the year of inauguration 1932 was found in a metal box.

The planned re-erection had been delayed again and again since 2009 due to lack of funds, but was finally completed at a later point in time, only a few meters from the original location.
